Interviews are not just a test of your knowledge they are a test of your composure, your ability to deal with things on the spot, and your patience. Here are a few tips to ensure that your next interview goes smoothly.
When you are calm and collected during your interview, it is reflected on to your interviewers. So be kind to yourself and remember to take a deep breath in.
- Know when to stop speaking. Practice timing your answers, no interviewer wants to listen to your schpeel for 6–7 mins. Keep your answers short, concise, and clear, ideally within a 2–3 mins timeframe. While it may be tempting to showcase all your talents and skills during the interview, one of the biggest challenges is to know when to stop talking!
- Ask clarifying questions before answering. Before even jumping into answers, be sure of the question, and really understand it before answering it. Unsure of what the interviewer just asked you? Reiterate the question in your words before you answer it. This lets the interviewer know that you don’t just jump in head-on and are comfortable asking questions when it is needed.
- Structure your answers. I have been on both sides of interviewing and have done it for a variety of roles, one thing that is a common factor is structuring your answers in a way that is easily comprehensible. Stories are always remembered…
